Flight attendant jobs with charter carriers

Omni Air International DC-10 tailMatt Keegan over at CabinManagers.com has posted his monthly hiring forecast for cabin crew positions. The June, 2008 report focuses on flight attendant job opportunities with charter carriers.

We all know that, given the current price of fuel and the downturn in the overall economy, many airlines are struggling to continue operating, and there are fewer and fewer scheduled carriers recruiting for cabin crew vacancies. In his article, Matt makes a good point about charter airlines:

One question that prospective candidates have in mind when working for a charter airline is this — are they stable enough to survive the ups and downs of the business? Though it is impossible to predict how any airline will perform long term, the advantage for a charter operator is that their increased costs (namely fuel) are passed on to the customers.

Unlike scheduled airlines who must hold the line on costs or risk losing business, the pressure for charter operators is a bit different — they still want to offer the best service at a decent price, but they can only do this by recouping their rising costs from their customers.

Flight attendant hiring forecast for May, 2008

Emirates cabin crewLast month I wrote an article here on Cabin Crew News about a useful website for those seeking work as flight attendants. That website, CabinManagers.com, is run by Matt Keegan, someone I have known for quite awhile. Matt has been involved in the aviation community for a long time, and I know he keeps his finger on the pulse of the industry as well as anyone can in these tumultuous times.

In April, Matt launched a new monthly hiring forecast feature on CabinManagers.com to provide up-to-date information, identifying cabin crew hiring trends in major markets around the world. The May 2008 Hiring Forecast was posted to the website today. The guidance provided by this monthly forecast feature is particularly welcome these days. With so many carriers filing for bankruptcy protection or going out of business altogether, it is important to choose a financially healthy employer.

Highlighted in the section on where to look for work are Etihad Airways and Emirates Airlines, two growing international carriers based in the Middle East that are currently recruiting cabin crew. Also mentioned were Virgin Atlantic, and the all-premium class carrier Silverjet.

To understand just how timely this information is, you only need to look at a few recent news headlines. For example, while premium-class trans-Atlantic carrier Eos ceased operations just days ago due to financial difficulties, its competitor, Silverjet, just announced an investment pledge of $100 million -- good news indeed. Meanwhile, Emirates just reported record profits in its annual report, released yesterday. The Chairman and CEO of Emirates Group commented, "As we plan for the next decade, our biggest challenges will be to find more pilots, engineers, cabin crew and skilled staff across our various business units."

Flight attendant jobs and hiring trends

Cabin crewThe bad news: Recently, several airlines have shut down their passenger operations, leaving thousands of their employees suddenly jobless. Among those are hundreds of capable, experienced flight attendants.

The good news (relatively speaking) is that some airlines and corporate aviation departments are hiring cabin crew at this time. One place on the web where you can find out who is hiring flight attendants is CabinManagers.com, a website that specializes in following hiring trends for cabin crew. The website features valuable information about the overall market for cabin crew jobs -- both commercial and corporate -- as well as specific job listings. CabinManagers.com charges no fees for job referrals.

This week, CabinManagers.com launched a new feature: A monthly hiring forecast. The April 2008 Hiring Forecast is up on the website now, and a new one will be posted each month. This month's report mentions which mainline, regional, and charter carriers in the U.S. are hiring flight attendants, as well several opportunities for cabin crew outside the United States. The report includes direct links to career fairs and the recruiting pages of airlines that are accepting online applications. Go and have a look. I think you'll find CabinManagers.com to be a very worthwhile job search resource, whether you are an experienced flight attendant looking for a new position, or seeking to enter the cabin crew profession for the first time.

Flight attendant hiring freeze at United Airlines?

United Airlines logoEarlier this month when I was researching an article about the profit-sharing distribution to United Airlines flight attendants, I noticed that the carrier was continuing to hire new cabin crew. I mentioned it here, and posted a link to the flight attendant careers page on the airline's website.

Then I began to hear a rumor that United had suspended recruitment of new flight attendants. The rumor caught me by surprise, so I decided to find out if it was true. I'm sorry to report that this is indeed the case, according to information published on the website run by the United Airlines Master Executive Council (MEC) of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), the union representing United's flight attendants.

News of the hiring freeze is contained in a letter to United's AFA membership from Greg Davidowitch, President of the United MEC. Dated March 18, 2008, the letter addresses plans by the carrier to downsize its fleet, and discusses the potential impact of this move on United's flight attendants. Quoting from Mr. Dawidowitch's letter:

Undoubtedly, there will be an impact on our flying as a result of potential staffing decisions and which markets United may cut as a result of the downsizing of the fleet. At this time we can confirm that based upon our discussions with management there are no plans for a furlough as a result of today's announcement. United will implement a hiring freeze for the newest Members of our Flight Attendant community for classes that were originally scheduled to begin after March 31, 2008. There are no plans to release Flight Attendants who are currently in new hire training and we look forward to welcoming our newest flying partners on the line.

United Airlines flight attendants get profit sharing distribution

United AirlinesThis week, flight attendants at United Airlines flight are receiving profit-sharing payments related to the airline's 2007 performance. United's US-based flight attendants can expect to receive a profit-sharing payment of about $1,200, before withholdings, for every $30,000 of eligible earnings, according to a news release issued by the airline.

This is the second year United provided profit sharing to its employees and the benefit is part of their union contracts. Under the terms of their union's contract, which was negotiated during the airline's bankruptcy, United's flight attendants receive their profit-sharing award in the form of a company contribution to their 401(k) accounts.

United Airlines flight attendants are represented by the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA).

American Airlines recalls 460 furloughed TWA F/As

American Airlines logoAmerican Airlines (AA) is sending recall notices to 460 former TWA flight attendants who had been furloughed soon after the 2001 terrorist attacks. The new recalls are in addition to the 200 flight attendants recalled earlier this year. This will be the fifth flight attendant recall by AA since 2003.

A statement about the latest recall on the AA website says that flight attendants who accept and meet all requirements will be eligible to return to service in either November or December 2007.

Emirates recruiting cabin crew worldwide

Emirates Airlines, based in Dubai, is the fastest growing airline in the world. According to a recent article in the International Herald Tribune about Emirates' expansion plans, the airline will take delivery of one new Boeing or Airbus plane a month for the next five years. Among these will the 55 super-jumbo A380s that have been ordered.

All of this rapid expansion means increased job opportunities for crew at Emirates. If you are thinking about seeking employment as cabin crew with a large international carrier, you may want to consider Emirates. In order to qualify, you must have at least a high school education, and have fluency in both written and spoken English. You must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application. All Emirates cabin crew are based in Dubai.

This month Emirates will be holding recruitment sessions in Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, Egypt, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mauritius, Singapore and Slovakia. Visit the Cabin Crew page of the Emirates recruiting website for more information, or to submit your application on line.

AA recalling 200 flight attendants

American Airlines announced today that it is sending recall notices to 200 furloughed flight attendants. A news release issued by the airline says that "AA flight attendants, including former TWA flight attendants will be included in this recall."

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, the union representing American Airlines cabin crew, confirms that the recall notices are going to the 200 most senior furloughees.

An article about the recall in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram says:

American still has about 2,100 attendants on furlough, many of them former TWA employees. Under their current contract with American, furloughed attendants lose their right to be recalled after five years. That's led many TWA attendants who were laid off in 2001 and subsequent years to attempt to change the rule so they can eventually return to work.

Last year, TWA attendants protested at the headquarters of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, claiming that the union wasn't representing their interests. But some have also supported the union in its recent marches and rallies against executive pay at the airline.
Recalled flight attendants can choose to work at American's crew bases in Boston, New York or Washington, D.C
