Flight attendant solidarity: AFA supports APFA campaign

AFA-CWA logoIn a commendable show of solidarity, the Association of Flight Attendants, the union representing the flight attendants at regional airline American Eagle, has issued a public statement in support of flight attendants at American Airlines, who are represented by a different union. As recently reported here in Cabin Crew News, American Airlines flight attendants, represented by the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA), are engaged in a campaign to protest chaotic air travel for passengers and highlight their own poor working conditions.

In a statement issued by AFA, the American Eagle flight attendants emphasized that they share the concerns of American Airlines flight attendants "to improve working conditions as flight reductions have led to grueling schedules for our fight attendants as well. We know firsthand that cuts and reductions come off the backs of all front line employees of AMR."

AMR is the parent company of both American Airlines and American Eagle.

"On behalf of the American Eagle flight attendants at AFA-CWA, we stand in support of our sisters and brothers at American Airlines in their quest to improve working conditions and restore their wages which were decimated in order for airline management to avoid bankruptcy," said Veronica Tenerelli, AFA-CWA America Eagle President.

"Management continues to reward themselves with millions of dollars in bonuses. Flight attendants in this country are working more for less, and it is time to restore some of what has been lost over the years.

"History has taught us that what happens at one airline often has a domino effect at other carriers. That is why AFA-CWA supports the efforts of our colleagues at the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) as they continue to focus on improving the quality of life for all flight attendants."

Over 1,500 flight attendants at American Eagle are scheduled to enter negotiations with airline management next year.

I am an AA flight attendant. I very much appreciate the stand in solidarity. We are especially appreciative in light of the fact that our AE brothers and sisters have even more draconian workrules and diminished salaries than we have. It is a terrible time to work in the aviation industry in the U.S. The good news is that nearly all flight attendant unions in the U.S. have joined in a single alliance to work together to restore our careers.

The sad news is APFA is in the business of side letters of agreement that prevent restoration of jobs for the furloughed attendants at AA.
Touting "Fair Labor Practice", APFA is directly responsible for "Harming" the lives of its members in good standing.
The same AFA that is in alliance with the likes of the APFA, is also aware of the inadequacy of APFA. Union leaders industrywide, offering letters of support that APFA will do the right thing, may soon witness the results of an independent union and it's Failure to Represent.
Stay tuned folks!
